Alicante TRAM is a rail service that connects the Alicante city centre with San Juan Beach and neighbouring towns such as El Campello, Benidorm and Denia.
The TRAM service operates in underground tunnels in the Alicante city centre and overground in the rest of the line. There are 6 TRAM lines split into 3 zones. Prices vary from 1.45€ for a single ticket for one zone to 3,90€ for single tickets for the 3 zones, and the equivalent of 0,76€ to 1.90€ when using the most affordable travel cards. Night services are available on summer weekends at the same price. Frequencies vary per line.
Alicante’s TRAM service is reliable but can be slower than the car on some routes. The service inherits the old “Trenet” rail tracks, and the updates from the old network focused on electrification and safety, but not speed. Let’s see all you need to use this service, including pricing, routes and schedules.
How to Pay for The TRAM
Alicante’s TRAM has a mixture of fenced underground and unfenced overground stations.
At the underground stations, the tickets must be paid for in advance on the machines around the stations and validated at the fare gates. A travel card is also valid.
At overground stations, the payment must be made inside the TRAM train. This is a bit counterintuitive, as the stations don’t have any payment machines available. The payment is done inside the train. The travel cards are also validated on the train.
All payment machines allow for: card payment, cash payment, and travel card recharge.
Routes
The TRAM train in Alicante has 6 lines:

In many of those stations, you can transfer from one line to the other if needed. Lines L1, L2, L3 and L4 all stop at Luceros, Mercado and MARQ-Castillo, which form the shared underground section in the Alicante city centre. Lines L5 and L9 do not pass through these stations.
There are 3 TRAM zones: A, B and C. And 2 special subzones: T1 and T2, serve as small zones in nearby stops located between the main zones. One zone fare is 1.45€, moving between two zones is 2,80€ and moving 3 zones is 3,90€. More details on prices and fares are down in this article, including return tickets and travel cards.

Fares
The single ticket price for one zone, such as Alicante-San Juan or Campello, is 1.45€ and the return ticket costs 2,50€.
If you move between 2 zones, the price is 2,80€ and 4,80€ for the return ticket.
Moving the 3 zones costs 3,90€ and the fare for the return ticket is 6,65€.
If you are going to use the tram often, it might be worth getting a travel card pass, which is a rechargeable travel card that costs 2€.
The fares go down by more than 45% by paying with a travel card bonus. The same travel card pass can be used by more than one person on the same trip.
Children under 10 travel free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. A maximum of two children per adult is permitted. The adult must carry official documentation proving the children’s ages.
Temporary Discounts on Travel Card Bonus
Until the 30th of June 2026, there is a 40% and 50% discount on some of the travel cards.
This is due to a money injection in public transport, which the central government is undertaking through autonomous and local governments in order to keep the inflation rate lower.
The discounts are for the TRAM trains and MIA buses.
Note that the single trip fare remains at 1.45€.
The prices and fares for the travel card pass vary depending on the number of trips. The discounts are applied at the time you buy the bundle card automatically. No need to claim it.
10 trips cost 4€ (normal price 8.00€) in between the same zone (0.40€ per trip, normal price 0.80€ per trip), 6€ (normal price 12,00€) in moving 2 zones (0.60€ per trip, normal price 1.20€ per trip) and 12€ per 10 trips (normal price 20,00€) when moving 3 zones (1.20€ per trip, normal price 2€ per trip). A 24-hour pass for unlimited travel in all zones is 8€.
30 trips cost 13.70€ (normal price 22.80€) (0.46€ per trip, normal price 0,76€ per trip), when moving 2 zones 20.60€ (normal price 34,20€) (0.69€, normal price 1,14€ per trip) and 3 zones commuting is 34.20€ (normal price 57,00€) (1.14€ per trip, normal price 1.90€ per trip).
There is also a bundle card for under 30 for which you need to live in Alicante (Bono 10 Jove for one zone is 6.80€ but 3.40€ with discount; for 2 zones is 10.20€ but 5.10€ with discount, and 3 zones is 17.00€ but 8.40€ with discount).
Remember: The same bonus ticket can be used by several people on the same trip.
There is also a 24-hour ticket that can be used for as many trips and as many zones as wished during the activation day. It costs 8€ and is not discounted.
The travel cards are different for each TRAM Zone and only allow trips within the zone to which it is assigned. As an example, if you have a 1-zone travel card but want to go from Alicante to Benidorm, you will need to buy a ticket at the start of your journey in Alicante. Alternatively, a card can be recharged with trips valid for travelling between zones.
Travel cards can be used only in the TRAM zone they have been habilitated for. Travel Card Mobilis bought for Tram Zone A can be used in Alicante’s city buses.

50% for Those Under 30
Another discount the government has kicked off is for those under 30. The 50% discount (via Bono 10 Jove) is active until the 30th of June 2026.
To qualify, you just need to be under 30 years old and get a temporary carton travel card that will be attached to your Spanish ID card (DNI), your resident ID card (NIE) or your passport. To apply:
- Enter Tram De Alicante website. Inside the Bulletin Board, press “Free Jove season ticket – Request an appointment by clicking on this link >>>“. You should be redirected to this page.
- Book an appointment to pick up your card in one of the TRAM De Alicante stations.
- Pick up the travel card and validate it every time you use the bus or TRAM.
NOTE: If you don’t have a Spanish DNI or NIE, follow the instructions in this link. Essentially, you need help from someone with a DNI or NIE to book the appointment for you. Then, at the time you have the appointment, borrow her/his ID card. Showing your friends’ ID and your passport, you will be able to pick up your discounted travel card.
Even though the process to get the discounted travel card is done using the TRAM website and offices in the stations, the discount is valid for the bus services too.
Also, remind you that, to qualify, you don’t need to be a resident, be empadronado or live in Alicante. Just be 30 or less and have a valid ID card/passport.
Special Zones T1 and T2
There are a couple of special zones called T1 and T2 that are situated where the TRAM zones switch. So T1 is in between Zone A and Zone B. T2 is between Zone B and Zone C. When travelling inside the special zones, the tram ticket to pay is just for 1 zone.
As an example, a traveller from Calpe to Altea would typically have to pay for a two-zone ticket (C to B). But both TRAM stops are inside the special zone T2. That means travellers from Calpe to Altea would need to pay a ticket fare equivalent to just one TRAM zone.
Other Travel Cards Discounts
There are also travel cards for young and senior people. Talk to the staff at Luceros station about how to get it and to know if you qualify.
How to Buy a Travel Pass Card
To buy a Travel Card in Alicante city, you can go to Luceros Station or any kiosk in Alicante, as the same travel card works on Alicante’s buses and TRAM Zone A. At Luceros, there is a counter with TRAM’s staff that will facilitate you with the proper travel card for your typical journeys and the first travel pass with 10 or 30 trips.
Once you have a travel card, it can be recharged on the machines at Luceros and Mercado or inside the TRAM trains. The card can also be used on the bus network at the same price.
Other gated stations in the TRAM network, such as Benidorm or Campello, also sell travel cards.
TRAM Zones and Travel Card Differences
Tram travel cards or bonuses can be used only in the TRAM zone they are assigned to. For example, if you bought a travel card in Alicante, it can be used only in Tram zone A –Alicante Luceros to Poble Espanyol and other TRAM lines- and Alicante’s buses. If you bought the Mobilis travel card in Benidorm, it can be used only in zone B -from Amerador to Olla Altea in the north.
If you have a travel card bought in Alicante but want to travel to Benidorm, you will need to buy a new ticket in the machine for the trip from zone A to zone B.
Alternatively, if you travel between Zone A and Zone B often, you can talk to a member of the staff at the counter in the tram-gated stations to assign the travel card to be valid for trips between two zones. This way you can use your travel card to travel from -as an example- Alicante to Benidorm.
Keep in mind that if you assign two zones to your travel card every trip, even if it is inside one single zone, you will be charged at the higher fee of two zones.
Equally, if you want to use your travel card for the special zones T1 or T2, you need a member of the staff to assign your travel bonus trips to be used only in the special zones.
How to use the Travel Cards Mobilis
1. The travel cards must always be tapped in at the start of your journey at either:
- The gate at gated TRAM stations -that are underground in Alicante and overground in the rest of the network-
- Inside the TRAM train at the rest of the stations
It is important to always tap in as ticket inspectors randomly board the train.
Travelling without a valid or validated ticket can result in a 100€ fine. Make sure your ticket is validated at the start of every journey.
2. The travel card must be only tapped out only if you are getting off at a gated station. The automatic gate would check that the trip has been previously validated and open the door for the traveller.
Several People Can Use the Same Travel Card
Note that the same travel card can be used by several people on the same journey. Just tap in the same travel card as many times as people are travelling.
In case of need to get off at a gated station, just pass the travel card at the gate once per person travelling.
Be Aware of the trips on your Travel Card Or Recharge Trips
To see the trips available or recharge your Mobilis TRAM bonus, you can:
- Ask a member of the staff at any station counter to do it for you
- Use any ticket machine at stations or inside the TRAM trains
- Use Alicante’s TRAM App for Android or for iPhones
- Ask at kiosks in Alicante’s city for Zone A travel cards
There is a maximum journey time. Once you validate your ticket, you must complete your journey within the following time limits:
- 1 zone: 90 minutes
- 2 zones: 150 minutes
- 3 zones: 240 minutes
If you exceed these times, you may need to validate again or purchase a new ticket.
Use the Same Travel Cards at the Alicante Bus Service
Alicante TRAM travel cards for Zone A are valid for the bus service in Alicante. So, the travel cards bought in a kiosk or the TAM office can be used in the TRAM trains for zone A and vice versa. The price per single trip and the travel card fees remain the same in both TRAMs and buses.
The official name for the TRAM trains is TRAM d’Alacant or TRAM de Alicante. Likewise, the name of the bus service is MIA, Movilidad Inteligente de Alicante, or Smart Mobility of Alicante.
Transfer between buses is free if done within 60 minutes from the first touch with the travel card. Sadly, transfers do not apply to TRAM services and changing from a TRAM train to a bus will just void another trip in your travel card.
Note that transfers with a single trip ticket are not available either in TRAMs or bus services.
The TRAM Trains
Most of the TRAM line is electric. The trains are modern and quiet. All trains have cooling A/C on in summer and heating in winter.
There are no toilets on the trains or stations, so have this in mind when planning a long trip.
Note that the TRAM has buttons inside the trains to ask the driver to stop at the next TRAM stop. This is especially important at slack times, as any passenger might have pressed the stop button for the TRAM stop you would like to get off. It behaves in a similar way to what a bus would do.
Travelling With Bicycles, Scooters or Pets
Only non-electric folding bicycles are permitted on the TRAM. They must remain folded at all times inside trains and stations. Electric bicycles, electric scooters, and non-folding bicycles of any kind are prohibited (rules updated October 2025).
Sadly, any electric vehicle, such as electric bikes or scooters, is not permitted anymore, this include non folding bikes too; even if no electric.
The TRAM services remind customers not to cause any damage to other passengers or the stations and trains with the vehicles.
Sadly, it is not permitted to travel with big pets such as dogs.
The exceptions are small pets in cages, recognised guide dogs and police dogs, which are permitted.

Night TRAM Service: El Tramnochador
TRAMNOCHADOR is in operation on July and August Fridays and Saturdays (summer 2026)
Every year, the TRAM has night service at weekends. The service is called “TRAMnochador”, joining the Spanish words noche or night and TRAM.
In 2026, the Tramnochador operates from the 05th of July to the 31st of August on Fridays and Saturday nights + bank holiday eves (such as the 14th of August –Asuncion de la Virgen)-. The operating lines are L1 (Benidorm), L2 (San Vicente), L3 (El Campello), L4 (San Juan Beach) and L9 (Denia).

The L9 schedule is not everywhere in the TRAM stations as it is for the other lines but I will try to add it to the article as soon as I can get it.
For now, I checked on the TRAM’s website and, from Denia, there is a L9 train departing every hour from 5am to 9pm at minute 50. So the first tram is at 5:50am, the second is at 6:50am and so on.
Have in mind Denia-Alicante TRAM is quite slow -the journey takes around 3h and you have to change trains-. If you are doing this trip as a way to contemplate outstanding views by all means, it is worthy to do. If you are more in a rush I would try getting the coach. Check alsa.es as there are some services taking just 1:30h, similar to the time it takes by car.

I’m planning for a couple of nights in Alicante Victor, and specifically wanted to use the tram for the views, So I’m happy with the time it takes. May take even longer, as I might stop off in Denia and Benidorm for an hour or two. Thanks again for your article

Children being under 10 years old can travel for free if they are with an adult holding a valid ticket. Max two children per adult. Also, you should wear a document that proves the kid’s age, such as passport or EU ID card -but I doubt they will ask you for it-. No need for a temporary carton travel card or anything else.

I am coming back to Alicante for the first time since 2019 (can’t wait!). We had a physical card for busses last time which we have kept hold of. Is the the same card still used today and will be ok for trams as well?

Welcome back to Alicante! The card for busses is still going to be working and any trips you might still have should work too. If you have to add more trips to the card, it will be cheaper than in 2019 as the prices are the same but the government is temporally subsiding part of the fee for both the Bus and TRAMs.
The same card will work on busses and TRAMs.

Yes we will enjoy thoroughly, we are lucky enough to have a shared family apartment close to albufreta beach so know Alicante well and love to visit at least once a year. Covid and life got in the way the last few years but we are going back to where we belong!

I have read your question a few times but I am not sure what are you asking for exactly. So I’m gonna give you a few keys might help understanding how the single ticket and zones work:
– A single ticket can be used only for one trip
– A single ticket can be used only during the few hours after you bought it
– A single ticket for one zone can be use only in one zone, -eg, zone A, B or C-, plus the special zones T1 and T2
– A single zone ticket bought on Tram zone A can be used to travel from Alicante-Luceros to: San Vicente, Plaza Coruña or Poble Español and to/from all the stops in between
– There is also 24h ticket you can use as much as you want for 24h and move from/to all the zones in the Tram network. Not valid for the bus services

I boarded above ground but could not see where to validate my card as it was crowded and only one stop. I did tap it on exiting the station underground. Will that count as one trip or the maximum of three trips since the system does not know what zone I started in?

The Tram has some quirks that make its use not very intuitive, so let’s try to clarify where and when to tap.
The rule is to tap the travel card always at the start of your journey. Only when finishing the trip on underground stations you need to tap also on exit. So:
– On underground stations you have to tap the card at the station barriers when entering and on exit.
– On overground stations you have to tap the card inside the train itself only on entrance.
In the article, there is a photo where you can see the indoors of a Tram train. The machine on the left of the photo is where you need to tap your travel card when getting into the Tram train.
I am unsure on the charge you have got on your travel card tapping only on exit and I might ask next time when on a Tram station. My theory is they don’t charge you more than one trip as no inspector has “caught you” with a non valid ticket on the train. If an inspector would have caught anyone with no valid Tram ticket the fine is 100€.

If I have a plastic card which I bought for 10-30 travels in Alicante. Can I use this card also to travel to Benidorm? As I understand Benidorm is zone B and the travel must be more expensive- how to use correctly the card for this travel? Or should I better buy single card in the tram for Benidorm and cannot use the card for this? This question is left open to me. Or I just did not understand how to use the card for longer travel to another zone:-)

You are right, I will clarify that in the article soon.
The cheapest way you can travel from Alicante to Benidorm is buying a new single ticket -or return ticket if you are going back in the next 24h as it is cheaper-. Theoretically, you could touch your current travel card 3 times: in Alicante, then Campello and then, for example, in Villajoyosa and your trip will still be “legal” but it doesn’t makes much sense as it is more expensive (but keep reading).
The only exception is if you bought your travel card in the last year or so with the 50% discount. Let’s say you bought 10 trips on the travel card. This is 0.40€ per trip. A return trip Alicante-Benidorm would need 6 touches of your card (3 for each way). This means you would expend 0.40€*6= 2.40€ what is cheaper than the single return trip of 4.80€ as it is not subsidized by the government.
You can also buy another plastic travel card with 2 zones trips if you are doing the Alicante-Benidorm trip often.

So yes, there is a bus from the Airport to Luceros: Alicante Airport bus C6. Even thought the last/first stop is Puerta del Mar you can follow the route up to the Train Station in the same ticket. Luceros is just one stop before the Train Station.
And Alicante-Denia is a beautiful easy journey. It is time consuming as takes about 2 hours. There is a mandatory train change at Benidorm. If there are any construction work affecting the tracks there is always a bus to continue the journey.
The Tram Alicante-Denia is a very beautiful and pretty route to do if you have the time available 🙂

hi! can i move between the metropolitan lien using the same ticket or using one trip from the plastic card. I have to get from porta del mar to frabraquer. meaning, i take L5 and then move to L1 or L3, do I need 2 ticket or just 1?

Puerta del Mar and Fabraquer are both Zone A TRAM stops. You are right, you need to change trains from L5 to L1 or L3. You need to validate the plastic card again in the new train but it won’t be charged as a new trip as you probably will use less than 60 minutes from the first validation at the first train to the next validation at the second train.

I purchased a Mobilis card and topped it up for unbelievably inexpensive travel.
However I have a question regarding the use of the card within the T1 zone.
I travelled from El Campello to Villajoyosa both stations being within zone T1. However, when I ‘tapped-in’ for the return journey the card reader refused my card and informed me that the card was invalid for the zone I was travelling from (Zone B).
Does the one zone Mobilis card not recognise the special T1 and T2 special zones? Should I have tapped out on leaving the tram at Villajosa? Would I have been fined for travelling without a valid ticket on either journey?

For now I am only going to answer this question:

No. The Mobilis travel card must be always tapped when getting into either the gated station OR the Tram Train. It must be tapped out ONLY on gated stations.
Reading every line of information they give on how to use the Mobilis card in Tram de Alicante website doesn’t say anything specific about the special zones and the Mobilis cards more than T1 and T2 are treated as one zone only.
My bet is the the Mobilis travel card failed on letting you out because they don’t have the cancellation system implemented properly. It might also be they have a rule not published in their website where you can not use the Mobilis card for whatever reason in the T1/T2 special zones. I haven’t done a trip in the T1 zone recently so I can’t give you a definitive answer just yet.
I will update you in a few days when I get this information for you and will update the article too.

all questions for you:

No.
The travel cards are zone dependent. A card for zone A only works in
that zone and buses. A card for zone B only works in zone B, a card for
zone T1 only works for zone T1 and so on. There are also multi-zone
travel cards that can be habilitated on the counter at the stations. The
disadvantage is that trips in between one zone will be charged as a
trip in between 2 zones.
– Should I have tapped out on leaving the tram at Villajosa?
No.
The obligation is to tap in either in the station if it is gated or in
the TRAM train if in a non gated stops. Only tap out in gated stations.
– Would I have been fined for travelling without a valid ticket on either journey?
Yes.
You ended up without a valid ticket as you were using the Mobilis
travel card only valid for zone A and Alicante’s local buses. The fine
is 100€. In my experience, the inspectors usually don’t strictly apply
the rules when see true good will from the traveller allowing them to
buy the correct ticket before giving them a fine. But this is of course
not guaranteed.
For the trip from El Campello to Villajoyosa the
right thing to do is buy a single or return ticket from the machine. If
you are doing trips in the zone T1 often the only way to get a travel
card is from a counter at El Campello station. Explain you want a travel
card for the special zone T1 and they should recharge it for you for
trips in that special zone. Then you would be using your Mobilis travel
card you got now for travelling towards Alicante and your new T1 card
for travelling to Villajoyosa. Both cards are similar looking NFC
plastic cards.

Ask to a member of the stuff in the counter at Mercado or Luceros stations, they should be able to sell you the 24-h pass for 2 zones so you can travel Alicante-Altea and any other travel combinations in between zone A and B 🙂

If taxis are not an option for you, there is a night bus from San Juan Beach to Puerta del Mar 🙂 Now in winter, it only operates on Friday, Saturday and bank hoildays night, but I think you are going back on Saturday night, no?

Hi, thanks for very detailed explanation of Alicante travel cards. I think it would help if there was some more information about special zones T1 and T2 and fares. Our starting point is Cala Piteres in T1 and our trips are to El Campello or Alicante. Our initial thoughts were we should get a TAM card for Zone A. But I think it does not apply for the full zone A. If this is the case I think this should be emphasised. It is also unclear whether this restriction also applies to a single or return ticket from Cala Piteres to Alicante. Does it?
The option that would work is a TRAM card (NOT TAM CARD) for 2 zones A and B but there is very little benefit depending on the single/return ticket price from Cala Piteres to Alicante. For these tickets I would expect the price to be a single Zone but is Cala Piteres really in Zone A as shown on the map?
My MuliViajes card does not work any more. Also we could not buy return tickets from Cala Piteres to El Campello using the machine on the train. Several people tried to help but only a single ticket option was displayed. Is there some restriction on returns in T1?
I will also check at Campello station and update.

The tourist card is only for urban bus lines (red buses), intercity bus lines (blue buses) and tram lines (TRAM) between Alicante, Playa de San Juan and Campello.
You won't be able to purchase it on the TRAM ticket machine. You can buy it on:

Monday-Friday: 9:00 to 19:00
Saturday: 10:00 to 13:00

Hello Victor. We are an older couple with limitations on walking ability in distance. We want to spend our last 3 days in Spain in Alicante area. We are staying at Elche and one trip we would like is to the market in Alicante itself. Whats the easiest way, say to park outside and get a bus or tram in, or Iunderstand there is a car park near the market but you have to know which entrance you need ! We would also like to visit tapas bars around the centre, but easily walkable? Can you help me please. I found the tram info very good but as we don't have anything like this in UK a bit confusing. As I understand you have a car. The easier way for central market is the parking La Lonja, the one you probably saw already. The entrance to the parking is here.
If you are staying in Elche there is no Tram to Alicante, but there is a Renfe train and the train stop is like 10 min walk, probably longer with reduced mobility.
Mercado is adapted to reduced mobility so it should be easy to get in.
About tapas bar you can try the bar at Plaza 25 de Mayo . Just behind Mercado that you will see when coming from the Parking.
